After touring Jalama Canyon Ranch with Jackie Eshelman on my first day at the fellowship, I was set to attend an Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) ride-along with her and Stefan Selbert, the Operations Manager of Las Cumbres Ranch.
We hopped in Stefan’s truck and headed out to the edges of the ranch to begin the monitoring.
EOV monitoring measures regenerative outcomes on ranches and farms. It is non-prescriptive — simply a way to monitor and collect valuable data on the health and wellbeing of the land and the ecosystem in which the land resides. Monitoring happens at least once per year and looks at many different land health measurements, including biodiversity, soil health and ecosystem function. The first year and every 5 years afterward, there’s a slightly more intense monitoring where they also send soil samples out for testing to check carbon levels.
